eternal sunshine of the spotless mind for years i've put off watching eternal sunshine, it always felt like homework. but somehow, in the middle of a charlie kaufman rogue state it penetrated and i put it on. might be my new favourite movie i don't know, who cares about favourite movies anyway
nevada listening to this, along with reading on the tram and waiting for my dominos order, made me feel like listening to these hourlong video essays i put on autoplay. i know these essays, often by queer and trans creators themselves, by heart, and yet this book i am reading for the first time speaks to me on the same level. it kinda speaks to my limited experience of being a trans person, being kind of a detached asshole, being overthinking and over-academic about everything. nevada tells the kind of story i love, a failed attempt at self-discovery. the world would be great if we all go out and achieve our dreams, just one road trip away from destiny. but maria kinda sucks at self-actualization. she is constantly evaluating her life against expectations for women, for trans-women, how you should - have the obligation to - break these stereotypes, be punk rock, batman. self-destruction is equally appealing. but what is being trans if not trying to land somewhere in between and being okay with it
new moon insane amount of topless action
sphinx How do do you see me anyway?
I wanted to read this because of Garréta's connection to Oulipo forever and finally found the excuse for the book club. I knew about tje gimmick but I did not expect the resulting absence I won't spoil here to open up the book to such a deep dialogue about what actually constitutes gender, race, identity while challenging not just the character with this construction, but most importantly the reader. Banger.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives ghosts and migrant workers. absolutely loved this
Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere reminded me of this weird short documentary about gay men in post soviet russia being exploited in a new unregulated porn industry. gives the kind of uncomfortable that you get from just knowing something exists that should, on a fundamental level, not exist
Every Man for Himself and God Against All In the months without R, May, June, July and August, we didn't wear any underwear under our lederhosen.
I have not seen most of what Werner Herzog has produced over his still ongoing prolific career, so this vast timeline covered here, marked by films in a turbulent chronicity interweaving childhood, personal and professional remains a haze to me. Herzog practices a pessimistic pragmatism, a drive to chase stories and films on his guts. There is a certain cockiness to him, a believe that him putting himself on the line makes right when he hurts others, making integrity the core of his moral codex. This book is full of colourful characters Herzog certainly paints in more favourable light than most of them actually deserve. Honestly, I admire the man for the audacity with which he manages to live a life so full and adventurous. And for his deep deep weirdness, which he delivers with such profound musings and seriousness, that you cannot help but find a deeper truth in that eccentricity, that he somehow figured it out.
muppet treasure island watched this with someone who looks 1:1 like beaker, can recommend
frankenstein There is some incredible craft and beauty in the sets. The creature actor has a gruelling performance straight from the get-go. Elizabeth was flat and delivered a straight-to-classroom discussion prompt that preempts a lot of actually having to think. Hate these 'You are the monster, Victor.' lines. As always with NT it is bickering on a high level, there are very few if any bad productions, Frankenstein is no exception despite the gimmick
pride and prejudice Saw it in cinemas today after first being exposed when I was 16. The earnestness in kitsch and romantic longing, the language ripped straight from the page. My English teacher detested Austin, probably because his heart had no room for it. First time getting a coffee and bringing it into the cinema w/ me, no snacks. Donald Sutherland laughing is such a choice to end this film and it is infectious. Biggest laugh of the night was Darcy walking through that foggy field, maybe we too are just a bit too irony-pilled still.
the blob i want to lick it
hard rain falling Don Carpenter writes with such clarity it cuts through all the sadness, the injustice and the philosophy you are confronted with here. We get criminals pondering the universe, society and their place in it, and their existential dread so easily becomes your own despite their horrible circumstances. To live intimately with any person, however, is to pursue understanding. This connection is at the center of it all, to learn to live with yourself, to love someone deeply and to understand those you want to punch in the mouth.
